Two brown bears, Bu and Tyapa, have completed a five-year international rescue operation that brought them from captivity in Russia's Dagestan region to a wildlife sanctuary in Ireland.1 Bu had been forced to perform in a circus for years, while Tyapa was confined to a 2.5-meter by 2.5-meter by 2-meter cage where he could not stand upright and accessed water only through a hose.1 The complex rescue mission involved more than 100 people, including volunteers, lawyers, veterinarians, transport specialists, cargo teams, and officials from Russia, the United Arab Emirates, and Ireland.1
The journey to freedom faced significant geopolitical obstacles. The original route through Ukraine was disrupted by the Russian-Ukrainian war in February 2022, while a second planned route was blocked by Middle Eastern conflict in February 2026.1 In late October 2025, rescuers Dima and Yana Kim embarked on a 36-hour drive to Dagestan to retrieve the bears.1 After arriving in Ireland in August 2025, both bears showed signs of recovery at Wild Ireland sanctuary in County Donegal, with blood tests revealing restored kidney function and both animals gaining weight.1
