The Archdiocese of New York has agreed to a settlement of $800 million to compensate approximately 1,300 survivors of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy members.1 The settlement has received unanimous approval from representatives of survivors' legal teams.1 Each victim will receive a minimum of $250,000 in compensation.1
The agreement was announced in May 2026 and is expected to be formally signed in early November 2026.1 According to New York Archbishop Ronald Hickey, "We are soon able to bring a degree of healing and reconciliation to all affected survivors."1 This settlement ranks as the second-largest clergy sexual abuse compensation case in United States history.1 The Los Angeles Archdiocese reached an $880 million settlement in 2024, which remains the largest single payout of this kind in the country.1
