Ukraine conducted a drone attack on an Iranian cargo ship in the Caspian Sea on Saturday, marking the first direct military link between the Iranian and Ukrainian conflicts.[1] The vessel, identified as the Anna, was struck approximately five kilometers from the mouth of the Volga River, according to Iran's ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali.[1]
Ukraine's ambassador to Israel, Yevhen Korniychuk, stated that the ship was carrying Iranian-supplied drone and missile components destined for Russia.[1] Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the strike as "a flagrant violation of the UN Charter," declaring that such an action "cannot go unanswered."[1] In response, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha dismissed Tehran's threats as "groundless," characterizing Iran's government as a "direct accomplice" in Russia's aggression against Ukraine.[1]
Iran has supplied Shahed drones to Russia since 2022, which Russia subsequently modified for use in attacks on Ukrainian cities.[1]
