Cyprus's Defense Minister has launched an inquiry into an incident involving the unauthorized detonation of ammunition by the National Guard's engineering corps during the peak fire season.[1] Half a dozen RPG rounds were detonated at the Kalo Chorio shooting range on the island's southern coast, igniting a rapidly spreading brushfire that consumed approximately 120 hectares (300 acres) of wild vegetation.[1]
The detonation occurred on a day when temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), in direct violation of restrictions on heavy weapons disposal operations during the summer months.[1] The resulting fire prompted the precautionary evacuation of two small communities in the area.[1] Suppression efforts mobilized around 100 firefighters and eight aircraft to contain the blaze.[1]
