Samples collected by NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission from asteroid Bennu have provided new insights into the early solar system's composition and dynamics. The return capsule, carrying approximately 120 grams of material from the asteroid, landed in the Utah desert on September 23, 2023.1 Through isotopic analysis of iron, titanium, and chromium, researchers discovered that Bennu's composition matches the isotopic signatures found in asteroid Ryugu and CI meteorites.1
According to research from ETH Zurich, the isotopic evidence reveals that Bennu formed roughly 4.5 billion years ago from a mixture of materials originating from both the inner and outer regions of the solar system, near the snowline.1 Scientists propose that Jupiter's early formation within the first million years of the solar system's development may have driven this mixing process through gravitational interactions, ultimately influencing the composition of Bennu and other primitive asteroids.1 The findings were published in Science Advances, volume 12, issue 39, in 2026.1
Japan's JAXA space agency plans to launch its own sample return mission from Phobos in late October 2026, with samples expected to return to Earth in 2031.1
