Prosecutors in Los Angeles have moved to dismiss the criminal case against David Huerta, president of the Service Employees International Union California, which represents more than 750,000 members.[1] Huerta was arrested in June 2025 while protesting the Trump administration's immigration enforcement actions in Los Angeles.[1] The U.S. Attorney's Office filed a motion to drop the charges on Monday, with the case set to be completely dismissed by the end of August provided Huerta continues to comply with his bail conditions.[1]
The labor leader was initially charged with felony obstruction of justice, though prosecutors later downgraded the charge to a misdemeanor in October.[1] Huerta has alleged that he was thrown to the ground, sprayed with pepper spray, and detained during his arrest.[1] His case drew attention from prominent Democratic officials, including Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and California's two Democratic senators, who wrote to request an explanation of the arrest; California Senator Adam Schiff also attended Huerta's bail hearing.[1]
