A U.S. Secret Service agent has been charged with felonies stemming from alleged fraternity hazing violence in the Miami area.[1] Marquez Christopher Pinder, 29, who works at the Secret Service's Miami field office, was arrested along with two other men for their involvement in beatings that authorities say constituted illegal hazing.[1] Pinder serves as the "new member educator" for Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.[1]
According to police, the three men carried out sustained assaults using wooden paddles and wooden sticks against two victims over four nights in early April.[1] The attacks took place at off-campus apartments and residences.[1] The injuries were severe enough to require hospitalization: one victim needed skin grafts and treatment for kidney damage, while the other required intubation.[1]
Pinder faces multiple felony charges including hazing with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery causing serious bodily injury, and attempted murder.[1] He was released on a $75,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court by September 24.[1] The Secret Service has suspended Pinder, who has been employed as an agent since 2023.[1] Under Florida law enacted in 2005, hazing that results in serious bodily injury or death carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.[1] That legislation was prompted by the 2001 death of University of Miami freshman Chad Meredith, who drowned after consuming alcohol during fraternity activities.[1]
