A 35-year-old officer with the Lauderhill Police Department has been arrested on multiple felony charges stemming from years of impersonation and unauthorized occupation of a deceased resident's property.1 Brian Louis Sguros discovered 71-year-old Dennis West dead in his Florida home during a welfare check on July 11, 2022, but rather than reporting the finding through proper channels, Sguros subsequently took control of the property for himself.1
Beginning in August 2022, Sguros illegally occupied West's residence and claimed to have invested at least $214,000 in extensive renovations, which continued through February 2025.1 During this period, Sguros assumed West's identity to manage the property's affairs, paying taxes and utilities under the deceased man's name.1 In 2024, Sguros applied for permits in West's name to undertake window and door replacement work.1 In February 2025, Sguros and his spouse submitted a form to the Broward County property appraiser claiming rights to the property.1 The scheme unraveled in fall 2025 when a real estate company obtained legal possession of the property through an estate proceeding and discovered Sguros's occupation.1
Sguros was arrested on charges including official misconduct, impersonating a deceased person, and identity theft.1 He was held on a $25,000 bail and subsequently placed on unpaid administrative leave from his position.1
