Archaeological research using scientific methods has debunked claims from more than twenty English pubs asserting they are the nation's oldest.1 James Wright, an archaeologist specializing in historic buildings, employed dendrochronology—tree-ring dating—to determine the precise age of wooden beams and establish the authentic record.1 His findings confirm that the George Inn in Norton St Philip, Somerset, has operated continuously since 1430–1432, making it England's genuinely oldest pub.1
The proliferation of competing claims stems largely from marketing strategies rather than folk tradition, Wright noted.1 One prominent contender, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, claims construction dating to AD 800, but evidence shows the building actually dates to around 1400, with documented operation as a pub only emerging in the early nineteenth century.1 The AD 793 date associated with this establishment did not appear until 1926, on a postcard without historical basis.1 Wright identified approximately twelve to sixteen genuine contenders that have continuously operated their businesses since the medieval period, with the oldest traceable to the fourteenth or fifteenth century.1 He emphasized that any pub claiming mention in the Domesday Book is misleading the public, as that historical document contains no pub references whatsoever.1
