The Gambia, a small West African nation with fewer than 2.5 million people, faces a complex intersection of historical trauma, contemporary health challenges, and emerging economic opportunities.1 A recent investigation into the country reveals how this "Smiling Coast of Africa" is grappling with its past while building toward its future, including deepening ties with China.
The country carries the weight of its role in the transatlantic slave trade. Kunta Kinte Island, named after an enslaved African whose story inspired a widely-read novel, served as a transit point where approximately 600 enslaved Africans were shipped to the Americas each year from the late 17th century through the early 19th century.1 The island and related sites were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2003, preserving this painful historical record.1 Today, the nation's economic landscape remains challenging, with 81 percent of employment in the informal sector.1 Among young people aged 15 to 35, 41.3 percent are neither employed, in school, nor receiving training, while 78.1 percent of women in the workforce hold informal positions.1
Disease burden adds another layer of difficulty to development efforts. Malaria cases dropped significantly from nearly 250,000 in 2015 to 53,000 in 2019, declining further to approximately 58,000 by 2025.1 However, the country's draft national malaria elimination strategy for 2026–2030 requires approximately $173 million in funding, leaving a gap of over $100 million against actual needs.1 Tourism represents a potential growth engine, accounting for roughly 20 percent of GDP according to President Barrow.1 The Gambian population skews young, with 97 percent under age 65, suggesting a demographic dividend if employment opportunities can expand.1
Bilateral relations with China have strengthened recently. The two countries restored ambassador-level diplomatic relations in 2016 and established a strategic partnership in September 2024.1
