German Foreign Minister John Wadephul has cautioned that disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea, and the Black Sea pose a risk of food crisis in the Global South ahead of a foreign ministers' summit in Istanbul.1 Military actions by Iran, Houthi forces, and Russia are disrupting global trade flows, with particularly severe implications for the poorest regions dependent on wheat imports and key partners like Turkey, according to Wadephul's assessment.1
"We are all feeling the effects of rising freight costs, whether at gas stations or supermarkets," Wadephul stated.1 "But in other places, when fertilizer cannot reach areas essential for basic agricultural production, there is a threat of famine."1 The summit, scheduled for October 23, 2026, in Istanbul, will bring together foreign ministers from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Egypt to address Middle East developments, the Ukraine conflict, and other geopolitical issues.1
