A research team from Kyung Hee University in South Korea has proposed a new theory about the astronomical basis of Vincent van Gogh's iconic painting "Starry Night." 1 Using astronomical simulations, stellar position measurements, historical weather records, and analysis of van Gogh's letters, the researchers determined that the painting's inspiration likely came from the dawn sky visible on July 22, 1889, rather than the traditionally accepted June timeframe. 1
The study, published in Scientific Reports, an open-access academic journal under Springer Nature, examined the celestial configurations depicted in the work. 1 The researchers, including Elijah Jeong-hyun Kim and Ho Jin from Kyung Hee University's Space Research Institute, found that the crescent moon, Venus, and the Pleiades star cluster portrayed in the painting align with the actual astronomical arrangement that would have been visible on that July morning. 1 Historical meteorological data and references to hot weather conditions mentioned in van Gogh's correspondence further support the July dating, contradicting the conventional interpretation that the work was created in mid-June. 1 The research drew on stellar position data, historical weather records, van Gogh's letters, and his early sketches to build its case. 1
