The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has extended its contract with Amentum Services for the operation of Camp East Montana detention center through September 30, 2027, rejecting repeated calls from Democratic lawmakers and human rights organizations to shut down the facility.[1] The extension will provide an additional $776 million to the contractor, bringing the total contract value to over $1.2 billion for the period from March 2026 through September 2027.[1]
Located at Fort Bliss military base near the U.S.-Mexico border in El Paso, Texas, Camp East Montana has faced persistent scrutiny over conditions and treatment of detainees since opening in August 2025.[1] The center houses an average of more than 2,000 people daily as of October 1, 2025.[1] Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union have documented severe allegations at the facility, asserting that "staff regularly beat detainees, refuse to provide medical care, force them to live in filthy conditions, and serve inedible meals."[1] At least three deaths have been recorded at the detention center.[1]
