Researchers from Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States surveyed 142 young men aged 16 to 25 about their attitudes toward masculinity-focused content on social media, finding a complex relationship between attraction and ambivalence toward the material.1 The participants appreciated self-improvement advice within this content but simultaneously criticized its sexist messaging, promotion of harmful health behaviors, and extreme viewpoints.1 Many young men demonstrated awareness of the content's potential harms yet tolerated these problematic elements to access the motivational and disciplinary guidance they sought.1
The study revealed a tension articulated by one respondent, Andy, 22, from Australia, who stated: "This is pretty toxic, but at the same time I can't help but want the confidence that their methods seem to offer. Like I don't want to be part of it because it's fucked, but just a little, I want to be like that so I would feel respected."1 Another participant, Kieran, 24, from the United Kingdom, emphasized the positive impact, saying he sought "courses and advice that could have a positive impact on my life. Overall I like it. It's helped build my confidence, helped me do better with discipline and exercise."1 A third respondent, Cam, 19, identified a troubling pattern in the content: "About half and half. A lot of content about masculinity but doesn't examine women. And I feel the louder minority follow over-masculinized role models who preach that to be a successful male you must put women down."1
Australia is advancing digital duty of care legislation that would enable young men to opt out of algorithms that amplify content harmful to women, girls, gender-diverse individuals, and men themselves.1
