Hossein Ghandehari, a major donor to Britain's Reform UK party, conducted substantial business dealings with a foundation controlled by Iran's supreme leader, according to investigations by the Guardian.1 Ghandehari pledged millions of pounds to Reform UK this summer and donated £50,000 for access to World Economic Forum passes in Davos.1
Between 2013 and 2016, Ghandehari's Ori Group acquired a 49 percent stake in a joint venture called Omran Razavi International Co, with the remaining 51 percent held by Astan Quds Razavi (AQR).1 AQR is a multibillion-pound religious foundation based in Mashhad, Iran, operating under the authority of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.1 The United States imposed sanctions on AQR in 2021, describing it as controlling a substantial portion of Iran's economy, including assets confiscated from political dissidents and religious minorities.1 The fiber-optic cable project that formed the basis of this partnership ended around 2016 following a change in Iranian political leadership, when a hardliner replaced the previous administration and entities supported by Ghandehari were excluded from the deal.1
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage characterized Iran in March as posing a greater danger to Britain than Russia under Putin.1 Mohammad Reza Nouri, the project's lead manager, subsequently served an 18-year prison sentence in Iran's notorious Evin Prison following the transaction's collapse.1 Ghandehari claims to manage the HP Trust fund, valued at approximately $10 billion (£7 billion), and has indicated plans for regular payments exceeding "a couple of million pounds."1
