Seven-week-old twins Raghad Hassan and Raad have become emblems of Yemen's deepening humanitarian catastrophe, their struggle for survival shaped by escalating conflict and acute food insecurity.1 The infants and their family were forced to flee their home in the Kahbub mountain region, trekking for three days on foot to reach the port city of Aden, during which the twins' condition deteriorated severely.1 Upon arrival, both were diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition, joining hundreds of thousands of Yemeni children facing similar medical crises.1
The collapse of an informal ceasefire during the summer has allowed Houthi forces to advance along the Red Sea coast, completely cutting off Taiz, Yemen's third-largest city.1 According to United Nations assessments, approximately 800,000 people lack access to humanitarian aid, while over 250,000 have been displaced.1 The organization estimates that 500,000 Yemeni children will suffer severe acute malnutrition this year.1 The humanitarian response is severely constrained by limited medical infrastructure; al-Sadaqah Hospital, where the twins receive treatment, has only 22 beds and can accommodate just 13 of the most critically ill patients at any time.1
Dr. Noor Mohammed, working at the facility, articulated the dire conditions: "Because of the circumstances, we will lose patients. We do not have good equipment such as ventilators and oxygen bottles."1 The family's displacement also devastated their economic survival—the twins' father, Bajash Ali Sagir Hassan, was forced to abandon ten sheep, his sole source of livelihood, during the escape.1
