China recalled 20.39 million intelligent connected vehicles during the first nine months of this year, with authorities emphasizing the need to prioritize safety throughout the development process.1 Among these recalls, 14.53 million units, accounting for 71.23% of the total, were prompted through defect investigations and other regulatory measures.1
A major recall on August 21 involved approximately 8 million vehicles from nine manufacturers, including Tesla, primarily due to safety hazards associated with hidden door handles.1 Tesla alone accounted for more than 2.97 million of these recalled vehicles, representing approximately 69% of the total for this particular defect category.1
Since 2019, Chinese authorities have implemented over 3,200 vehicle recalls affecting more than 120 million vehicles in total.1
Government officials have stressed the importance of embedding safety considerations into every stage of research and development to prevent manufacturers from compromising safety to accelerate market launches.1 A mandatory national safety standard for automotive door handle technology is set to take effect on January 1, 2027.1
