A fatal attack during Berlin's Pride festival on Saturday night claimed one life and wounded nearly 30 people in a van ramming and stabbing incident [1]. The suspect, a 21-year-old German-born citizen with Lebanese roots named Abdul Ballout, was killed by police on Sunday evening [1]. Authorities characterized the attack as an extremist terror attack [1].
In response, Syrian belly dancer Haidar Darwish, 30, who fled Syria in 2016, took the stage the following evening with his performance group Queens Against Borders to express solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community [1]. Alongside Egyptian belly dancer Aleya and Nigerian drag performer Countess Sasha Seduction, Darwish performed on Sunday night at Berlin's Museum Island [1]. Addressing the crowd, Darwish stated: "Yesterday there was an attack and a hate crime on our community in Berlin during the Pride Parade" [1]. Through dance and music, the performers demonstrated resilience and unity in response to the violence.
