French health authorities announced on October 22 that they have identified the first confirmed human infection with Shamonda virus, marking the first documented case of the pathogen in humans.1 The patient, described as a severely immunocompromised individual, died earlier in October.1
Shamonda virus is transmitted by biting midges (culicoides) and had previously circulated exclusively among animals in Africa and Asia for decades before this human case emerged.1 According to a joint statement from France's health and agriculture ministries, "Despite circulating in Africa and Asia for tens of years, Shamonda virus has never been detected in humans until now."1 The virus was first identified in Nigeria in the mid-1960s and was subsequently reported in animals across eastern France during spring and summer 2026.1
French health officials stated there is currently no identified risk to public health.1 The World Health Organization and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control have been notified of the incident.1
