The Kalihi Fund, a global initiative designed to raise $1 billion annually for biodiversity protection, has struggled dramatically since its launch in February 2025, attracting only $7,085 in actual funding by the time of COP17's opening on Monday.1 Major pharmaceutical companies have contributed nothing to the effort, drawing accusations that they are profiting from nature without shouldering responsibility for its preservation.1
The fund's shortfall is particularly striking given the pharmaceutical industry's dependence on global genetic resources to develop profitable medications.1 Research by Zero Carbon Analytics found that the world's top 15 pharmaceutical companies generated approximately $161 billion in profits in 2025, and by the fund's suggested contribution standard—1 percent of profits or 0.1 percent of revenue—these firms should have donated $756 million combined.1 Instead, the same companies distributed $132.3 billion to shareholders, a sum 175 times larger than what they were encouraged to contribute to biodiversity conservation.1
As of the conference's opening, the fund had received only $10,656 in total commitments, with actual disbursements limited to donations from three small enterprises: $5,000 from UK-based Prozomix, $1,000 from UK-based TierraViva AI, and $1,085 from Belgium's E-Biom.1 Industry representatives have pushed back against the fund's structure, arguing that the contribution requirements are poorly designed and duplicate existing legal frameworks.1 According to the fund's governance model, at least 50 percent of its resources are intended to support conservation priorities identified by indigenous and local communities.1
