American philanthropist Kenneth Behring has become widely recognized across multiple natural history museums in China through his extensive donations of wildlife specimens.1 Beginning in 2004 with the Dalian Natural History Museum, Behring initiated a specimen donation initiative that would expand across the country.1 His efforts have established a notable precedent for cross-Pacific cultural and educational exchange.
The Chongqing Natural History Museum has emerged as a major beneficiary of these contributions.1 Starting in April 2011, when the museum formally signed a cooperation memorandum with Behring, the Global Health and Education Foundation has donated nearly 1,500 pieces of rare animal specimens and handicrafts to the institution.1 This collection formed the foundation for the permanent "Behring Hall" exhibition.1 The exhibit has attracted over 12 million visitors since its establishment, with approximately 70 percent consisting of youth and student research groups, welcoming over 300 school research teams annually.1
Behring's philanthropic reach extends beyond Chongqing, with exhibition halls or thematic displays bearing his name established in Shanghai, Beijing, Qingdao, and Wuhan.1 The Global Youth Natural Science Challenge competition has operated in China for 15 years, with the Chongqing Natural History Museum participating for 14 consecutive years.1 These initiatives have fostered ongoing collaboration between China and the United States in ecological conservation and science education at the grassroots level.
