A major wildfire that erupted near Saumos in southwestern France on July 22 produced a pyrocumulus cloud—a rare phenomenon in which intense heat generates towering storm clouds capable of producing lightning that strikes the ground and ignites new fires.[1] The France National Federation of Firefighters confirmed this marked the first time such a phenomenon had been recorded in the country.[1]
The blaze has devastated vast tracts of land across the Gironde region, consuming more than 420 square kilometers of forest and scrubland while destroying or damaging over 240 homes.[1] The fire forced approximately 220,000 residents of Gironde to evacuate their homes.[1] On July 24 at approximately 6:20 p.m., departmental fire and rescue services officially documented the formation of the pyrocumulus cloud.[1]
The extreme conditions enabling such a phenomenon reflect broader climate trends, as continental Europe has warmed at twice the global average rate since the 1980s.[1] While such fire-generated clouds remain uncommon in France, Canada recorded 142 instances of pyrocumulus clouds in 2023.[1]
