Waitrose has inaugurated its first new large-format supermarket in eight years in Cricklewood, north London, as part of a £100 million investment programme 1. The opening marks a significant expansion milestone for the grocer, which operates over 300 stores 1.
The Cricklewood store opened this week 1, with a second major location planned to open next month in Hale Barns, Greater Manchester 1. Beyond these flagship outlets, Waitrose intends to launch four additional smaller stores next year, comprising one large supermarket and three convenience locations 1. The company has also committed to renovating 29 stores during the current year 1.
The expansion initiative comes as parent company John Lewis Partnership reported a pre-tax loss of £980,000 for the first half of the year 1. While Waitrose achieved a 4 percent increase in sales during the six-month period to August 1 1, underlying operating profit declined by £700,000 to £103,000 1. CEO Tom Denyard, who assumed the role in January following his previous tenure at Tesco 1, is leading the company through this growth phase. Waitrose has also reached its first company-level union recognition agreement with the Usdaw union 1.
