Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, announced that Pyongyang will resume broadcasting propaganda through loudspeakers along the entire border with South Korea within days.1 This marks the first restart of such broadcasts in 16 months.1
The move comes as relations between the two countries have sharply deteriorated. Tensions escalated in September when a landmine explosion south of the Military Demarcation Line injured three South Korean soldiers.1 Since Kim Jong Un declared North and South Korea to be "mutually hostile nations" in December 2023, Pyongyang has been reinforcing its border defenses.1 South Korea's defense ministry stated that if North Korea proceeds, Seoul will "naturally need to take corresponding countermeasures."1 South Korea had suspended its own broadcasts after President Lee Jae-myeol took office in June 2025, with military forces dismantling the loudspeakers in August.1 North Korea has characterized warning shots and broadcasts as provocations by "armed gangsters."1
