The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed on Wednesday the discovery of New World screwworm in a mule deer at a hunting ranch in Pecos County, Texas, marking the first detection of the flesh-eating parasite in American wildlife in decades.1 The parasitic infestation had previously been identified in a calf in Zavala County, Texas, in June.1
The screwworm, which feeds on living tissue, has spread northward from Central America through Mexico, prompting the United States to impose a ban on Mexican livestock imports lasting over one year.1 The ban was partially lifted in August, when staged trade resumed at Arizona ports.1 Despite these containment efforts, dozens of cases have been documented across the country this year, affecting horses, dogs, and cattle, creating strain on American beef supply and driving prices to historic highs.1
In response to the escalating threat, the director of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Allan Kane, urged vigilance, stating: "We encourage all hunters and landowners to remain alert during the hunting season and watch for signs of New World screwworm."1
