The British National Archives have recently released documents showing that Aneurin Bevan, the Welsh Labour leader, was monitored by MI5 security officials for over two decades due to his associations with communist figures, despite the contents of his personal file being described as "remarkably tame."1 Bevan's MI5 file was opened in 1933 after he became a backbench Labour MP, with surveillance beginning in the 1930s prompted by his connections to known communists.1 The monitoring persisted even after he became a postwar Labour government minister and oversaw the creation of the NHS.1
MI5 raised concerns about Bevan's friendship with Wilfred Macartney, who had been convicted on espionage charges, prompting MI5 chief Sir Percy Sillitoe to alert Prime Minister Clement Attlee in 1949.1 Attlee dismissed Macartney's allegations as "a farrago of lies" but nonetheless agreed to "warn" Bevan about the matter.1 However, internal security service assessments questioned the necessity of the surveillance, with one MI5 official writing in 1943 that "I do not consider that Bevan's activities should be a matter with which this Department should concern itself."1 The file was eventually closed in 1975, fifteen years after Bevan's death in 1960.1 An MI5 officer reviewing the archive after Bevan's passing commented that "considering what a controversial figure Nye Bevan was, this file is remarkably tame."1
