New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has announced that the long-awaited southwest extension of Sydney's metro will commence operations on Friday, October 30, marking the end of more than two years of replacement bus services 1. The expansion will connect ten new stations from Bankstown to the city's metro network, creating a continuous 66-kilometre line stretching from Tallawong in the northwest to Bankstown in the southwest 1.
The new stations include Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, Hurlstone Park, Canterbury, Campsie, Belmore, Lakemba, Wiley Park, Punchbowl, and Bankstown 1. The first train is scheduled to depart at 4:31 a.m. 1. The extension will reduce travel time from Bankstown to Central Station to 28 minutes, saving six minutes compared to the previous heavy rail service 1. During peak hours, the line will operate every four minutes, with five-minute intervals during the day and ten-minute intervals in the evening and on weekends 1.
