New South Wales has passed legislation permitting natural organic reduction, commonly known as human composting, making it the first Australian state to authorize the practice.1 The private member's bill, introduced by independent MP Alex Greenwich, provides a third disposal option alongside traditional burial and cremation.1
The composting process converts a body into approximately 110 kilograms of dry, fertile, pathogen-free soil over roughly 30 days.1 Greenwich, who researched the practice in Germany and the United States before sponsoring the legislation, saw the law pass on Wednesday.1 The state government must establish regulatory frameworks within 18 months, with the practice limited to specialized facilities.1
Several parliamentarians have indicated their intention to utilize the method after death. John Ruddick stated, "I am quite confident I will write in my will that I wish to be composted."1 Emma Hurst emphasized the environmental benefits, noting that natural organic reduction achieves complete carbon neutrality compared to cremation, which is energy-intensive and generates substantial greenhouse gas emissions.1
