Australian researchers have developed a comprehensive framework for preparing urban areas to cope with extreme heat events. The Greater Sydney Heat Wave Working Group, established in 2023, brought together 373 representatives from more than 40 organizations to create the Greater Sydney Heat Smart Cities Plan, which was unveiled in December 2024.1 The plan outlines 40 recommendations spanning the 2025–2030 period, targeting the approximately 5.6 million residents of Sydney.1
The recommendations address multiple dimensions of heat resilience, including raising community awareness of heat-related risks, designing cooler buildings and public spaces, and implementing targeted protections for vulnerable populations.1 According to the research findings, successful implementation of the plan depends on three critical factors: coordination among multiple agencies and sectors, meaningful engagement with local communities, and sustained long-term funding commitments.1
