The city of Taiz in Yemen is experiencing a deteriorating humanitarian emergency as Iran-backed Houthi forces have largely encircled the urban center, restricting the flow of essential supplies.1 Home to over 900,000 residents, Taiz has been subjected to severe shortages of water, fuel, and food, leaving hospitals without adequate medications.1 Aid organizations have warned that the situation is approaching an unmanageable scale, with concerns mounting over potential outbreaks of diseases such as cholera.1
The economic toll on residents has been severe, with commodity prices skyrocketing in black markets. The price of 20 liters of gasoline has surged from approximately $20 (£15) before the crisis to $80 on the black market, while potato prices have doubled.1 The World Food Programme reported in mid-October that wheat flour reserves in the city were nearly depleted, and no fuel has entered Taiz for two weeks.1 The Halo Trust organization disclosed that 30 of its staff members remain trapped within the city.1
International financial support for the humanitarian response has proven insufficient. The UN's humanitarian aid plan received only 23 percent of its required funding commitments.1 The United Kingdom has reduced its aid to Yemen from 196 million pounds in 2020 to 104 million pounds annually over the next three years,1 while the United States allocated zero funding for Yemen in the Trump administration's fiscal year 2027 budget.1 By contrast, during President Joe Biden's tenure, the United States had pledged approximately 760 million dollars in total aid to Yemen.1
According to Oxfam's Yemen advocacy manager Fatma Jaffar: "All the main entrances [to the city] have been blocked. The clashes are continuing and the casualties are very high."1
