France and Spain are experiencing unprecedented wildfires driven by sustained heat waves and severe drought conditions across Europe.[1] The combined burned area in both countries has exceeded 300,000 hectares (3,000 square kilometers), setting records for the region.[1] France has recorded 115,000 hectares burned this year, marking a modern national record,[1] while Spain's ecology transition minister Sara Aagesen reported that 153,000 hectares have burned—six times the amount burned in the first half of 2025.[1]
The scale of the disaster has forced mass evacuations across both countries.[1] More than 300,000 people have been displaced, including over 250,000 from France and 76,000 from Spain, representing one of Europe's largest evacuation operations since World War II.[1] In France, June temperatures averaged 3.8 degrees Celsius above normal, while rainfall fell nearly 50 percent below average levels.[1] Spain's Avila region has been particularly hard hit, with a single wildfire consuming over 50,000 hectares—ranking among Spain's largest fires on record.[1] A fire in the southeastern Almeria region has proven the deadliest, claiming 13 lives.[1]
The European Union has mobilized significant international support to combat the blazes.[1] Seven aircraft and four helicopters from the Czech Republic, Croatia, Germany, Portugal, Slovakia, Sweden, and Turkey have been deployed to France, while six additional aircraft have been sent to Spain.[1]
