NASA's Perseverance rover has surpassed the all-time distance record for off-world driving, achieving a cumulative distance of 45.22 kilometers (28.10 miles) as of October 11, 2026.1 This milestone eclipses the previous record of 45.16 kilometers (28.06 miles) held by the Opportunity rover.1 Remarkably, Perseverance accomplished this feat in just five and a half years, whereas Opportunity required nearly 15 years to set its predecessor record.1
The rover's accelerated pace owes much to its advanced autonomous navigation system, AutoNav, which has been responsible for over 90 percent of Perseverance's total mileage.1 On a single Martian day, the rover has traveled as far as 412 meters (1,351 feet).1 Steven Lee, project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, noted that "the original mission called for no more than 12.4 miles of driving. We've blown well past that."1 The rover's mission has been extended through the end of 2028.1
Throughout its journey across Jezero Crater, Perseverance has collected 29 rock and regolith samples while exploring the western rim of the crater, where ancient rocks formed approximately 4 billion years ago are providing scientists with evidence of Mars' past habitability.1 The rover operates on its 2,006th Martian day as it continues its scientific investigations.1
