Pascal Soriot, chief executive of AstraZeneca, has warned that Western pharmaceutical companies must operate at a significantly faster pace to avoid falling behind more innovative competitors, particularly from China.[1] Soriot stated that the company must "move much faster," emphasizing that the organization operates according to "Chinese speed."[1] He highlighted that Chinese pharmaceutical firms are making substantial investments in emerging technologies including antibody-drug conjugates and cell therapies, posing a potential threat to European and American pharmaceutical manufacturers.[1]
AstraZeneca remains confident in its growth target of achieving $8 billion in annual sales by 2030, up from $5.9 billion in the previous year.[1] In the first half of 2026, the company reported revenues of £30.7 billion, representing 6% growth on a constant currency basis.[1] However, the company faced a setback this month when its heart disease drug Wainua unexpectedly failed in clinical trials.[1] Soriot indicated that AstraZeneca is engaged in discussions with the new UK government regarding a US-UK pharmaceutical agreement.[1]
