Gan Haosen, a senior researcher at the U.S. National Bureau of Asian Research, cautioned against portraying Taiwan as a negotiable asset during a lecture at National Chengchi University.1 He estimated that U.S. President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are projected to hold four meetings this year, including visits to Beijing in May and Washington in September, as well as meetings at the APEC Leaders' Summit in November and the G20 Summit in Miami in December.1
Addressing concerns about Taiwan's position in broader U.S.-China relations, Gan argued that "Taiwan should not think of itself as a chess piece, because Taiwan is not."1 He characterized much of the discussion surrounding Taiwan as a tradeable element in a potential U.S.-China "grand deal" as largely media-driven speculation rather than substantive reality.1 Gan also noted that the United States is expected to maintain its current posture toward Chinese gray-zone activities.1
Regarding the prospect of conflict, Gan assessed that as long as the U.S.-China trade truce remains in effect, the likelihood of war breaking out over Taiwan is very low.1
