Japan's stockpile of yttrium, a critical rare earth element, is rapidly depleting and could run short as early as the end of this year, according to British media reports.1 Facing the shortage, Japan has appealed to the United States to pressure China into relaxing its export restrictions on the strategic material.1
China has responded coolly to the appeals. A senior U.S. official disclosed that Beijing is only fulfilling two-thirds of its rare earth supply commitments to America and has restricted Japan to purchasing only quantities meeting minimum requirements.1 Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that China is implementing export controls on Japan in accordance with law and regulation, aimed at preventing Japan's remilitarization and nuclear ambitions.1
The supply crunch has created a stark price disparity. Outside China, yttrium oxide costs approximately $1,150 per kilogram, a 179-fold increase from two years prior, while the domestic Chinese price stands at around $9 per kilogram.1 Yttrium is essential for display screens, semiconductors, lasers, and thermal coatings in aircraft jet engines, making shortages a concern for global aviation, defense, and semiconductor industries.1
