As China marks the 90th anniversary of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army's Long March, scholar Zeng Jun from the Central Party History and Literature Research Institute has outlined the enduring international significance of the historic campaign and the contributions of foreign participants and chroniclers. 1
Among those who experienced the Long March firsthand were several foreign nationals who became integral to the revolutionary struggle. Hong Shui, a Vietnamese communist, joined the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army in 1929 and was commissioned as a major general during the 1955 military honors ceremony, becoming the only foreign-born general among the founding generals of the People's Republic. 1 Korean-born Yang Lin also served as a Red Army soldier, while Swiss-born British missionary Frank Bachman, Canadian female missionary Agnes Lin, and New Zealand missionary Charles Sorensen were among the missionaries who witnessed or accompanied the Red Army during this period. 1
Bachman's firsthand account proved particularly significant; he traveled with the Second and Sixth Red Army Corps for 18 months, covering approximately 10,000 li, and later published his memoir "The Hand of Divine Will—A Western Missionary's Firsthand Account of Following the Red Army on the Long March." 1 American journalist Edgar Snow's work "Red Star Over China," translated into multiple languages, became a seminal text in conveying the Long March's story to international audiences. 1 In 1984, at age 76, renowned American author Harrison E. Salisbury retraced the Long March route and published "The Long March: The Untold Story" the following year. 1
According to Zeng, the Long March holds universal significance in three respects: it demonstrates that theory must be combined with practice, it proves the invincibility of armies sustained by ideological conviction, and it embodies spiritual aspirations shared by all humanity. 1 In July of this year, Zeng himself joined experts from the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Netherlands, Brazil, and New Zealand in retracing the Long March route, during which the international participants were deeply moved by the spirit of the Long March and China's contemporary achievements. 1
