Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the OECD and former Australian Finance Minister, warned in a weekend address that populist movements have gained unprecedented traction by tapping into legitimate public concerns about declining real incomes, housing affordability, and energy costs.1 Rather than countering populism with protectionist measures or restrictive immigration policies, Cormann argued that mainstream political parties must directly address the underlying economic grievances that fuel such movements.1
"Populism has won an audience it did not have five years ago," Cormann stated, adding that "mainstream parties that adopt populist economics cannot win back voters—they will lose twice."1 He contended that "the way to defeat populism is to solve the problems it exploits,"1 and outlined a reform agenda centered on tax restructuring and embracing artificial intelligence as a driver of productivity growth.1
Cormann highlighted structural imbalances in Australia's tax system, noting that 60 percent of tax revenue derives from income tax compared to the OECD average of approximately 36 percent, while Australia's consumption tax rate stands at half the OECD average.1 On immigration, he cited OECD data demonstrating that Australian regions receiving greater migrant inflows experienced faster employment growth among locally-born workers with no significant wage impacts.1 Framing artificial intelligence as "the greatest productivity boost of our lifetime,"1 Cormann positioned technological advancement as central to addressing economic stagnation and improving living standards.
