Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council has accused Beijing of using the upcoming 160th anniversary commemoration of Sun Yat-sen's birth as a vehicle for pro-unification propaganda.1 The Chinese government's Taiwan Affairs Office responded by stating that the event aims to inherit Sun Yat-sen's spirit of "maintaining national unity" and to "unite all Chinese people, including Taiwan's citizens, and resolutely combat Taiwan independence separatism."1
The Mainland Affairs Council spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh criticized the initiative as an attempt at "opposing independence and promoting unification" through a commemorative framework, and announced that the council would deny permits for government personnel seeking to participate in the related activities.1 Liang further contested Beijing's framing of the anniversary, arguing that from the Republic of China's perspective, 2026 should mark the 161st anniversary of Sun Yat-sen's birth rather than the 160th.1
