Australian Federal Police have alerted parliament to an escalating threat of youth crime and extremist radicalisation driven by artificial intelligence, with officials warning that the process of radicalisation can now occur within days rather than years or months.1 Acting Deputy Commissioner Sandra Bows stated that radicalisation timelines have compressed dramatically.1 Since 2020, 65 children—some as young as 12 or 13 years old—have been subjects of AFP operations, with 35 of them facing state or federal terrorism-related charges.1
The Australian intelligence community has observed a troubling shift in recruitment patterns. Claire McQuinnes, Deputy Director-General of Australia's intelligence and security agency, noted that two decades ago authorities primarily dealt with individuals in their early twenties, but the focus has now shifted to targeting children.1 A notable case involved a 13-year-old boy using Discord, during whose home search police discovered notes outlining plans for a school shooting.1 Senator Raff Sicheon, chair of the parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security, emphasised the need to understand how individuals become radicalised over the course of mere days or weeks.1 The committee is scheduled to submit its final report by March of next year.1
