A 14-year-old student from Norfolk, England, died by suicide after viewing suicide-related content on TikTok, prompting urgent calls for regulatory action against the platform.1 Adriana Retite, a student at Langley School, attempted suicide at home on the evening of May 8, 2026, and died two days later at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.1 In the week before her death, she had browsed multiple videos and images related to suicide on the platform, and school monitoring systems detected searches for content about methods of death on December 31, 2025.1
The coroner, Johanna Thompson, concluded that exposure to harmful content on TikTok "may have had a significant influence on her decision to take her own life that evening."1 Melanie Dawes, Chief Executive of Ofcom, the UK's media regulator, stated: "We are not seeing a safety culture from these large social media companies... they have been slow to acknowledge the risks their algorithms pose in promoting suicide and self-harm material."1 A 2026 summer investigation found that one-third of 1,825 children across 21 schools in the UK had been exposed to high-risk content related to suicide, self-harm, depression, or eating disorders in the week prior to the survey, with 7% encountering material that portrayed suicide as "normal, attractive or cool."1
Andy Burrows, Chief Executive of the Molly Rose Foundation, reported that "three-quarters of teenagers continue to see high-risk suicide, self-harm and depression content on TikTok."1 Ofcom launched a separate investigation in June to determine whether TikTok failed to fulfill its legal obligations to protect children from harmful content.1
