A mainland Chinese student at National Taiwan University has been expelled from Taiwan after posting a digitally manipulated photograph of President Lai Ching-te on social media.1 The student, surnamed Wang, created the image using forced perspective to make it appear as though he was pinching the president's head, accompanied by text reading "Little Lai Ching-te, brought down" along with hashtags promoting cross-strait unification and asserting that "Taiwan is an inalienable part of China."1
Taiwan's Immigration Administration revoked the student's entry permit and ordered his deportation following the incident, which occurred during a "Taiwan Bridge Program" event on the 12th.1 After the post gained attention, Wang subsequently deleted the content and issued an apology statement.1
The mainland Chinese government's Taiwan Affairs Office responded by warning that such incidents would inevitably create negative sentiment among mainland students and their families regarding study opportunities in Taiwan.1 Liang Wen-chieh, deputy director of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, characterized Wang's behavior as causing social disruption and inconsistent with the principles governing mainland students' admission to Taiwan, noting that while similar cases have occurred in recent years, their frequency has increased due to social media platforms enabling young people to generate online engagement.1
