U.S. federal authorities have identified a potential connection between executives at a ransomware negotiation firm and the ShinyHunters hacking group, with investigators believing that at least one American executive actively helped operate ShinyHunters' extortion website, shinywire.com.1 The website remained active from May 3 to October 16, 2026, and featured nearly 100 organizations that ShinyHunters had infiltrated.1 To date, ShinyHunters has extorted more than $70 million from victims.1
The investigation intensified following the group's September 2026 breach of the FBI's recruitment website, fbijobs.gov, where they stole sensitive personal data including medical and psychological records, Social Security numbers, and home addresses.1 Canadian cybersecurity executive Edward Dubrovsky, 54, was arrested and charged with extortion and threatening to disclose stolen data to interfere with interstate commerce.1 Investigators determined that Dubrovsky knew ShinyHunters had obtained FBI data but failed to notify the bureau before the group threatened to publish the information on Twitter/X.1 Dutch hacker Pepijn van der Stap was arrested on September 15, 2026, and his Signal messages revealed connections between the consulting firm executive and ShinyHunters.1
The investigation also uncovered that PowerSchool paid $2.85 million in ransom after being compromised by ShinyHunters in December 2024, with assistance from negotiation firm CyberSteward.1 The FBI issued a warning on May 15, 2026, advising victims against paying ShinyHunters ransoms.1 Jordanian authorities have detained Rey, a 16-year-old hacker from Amman identified as the current leader of ShinyHunters, who is cooperating with the FBI.1
