Engineers at MIT have created a novel thermoplastic yarn designed to address textile waste by enabling repeated melting and reprocessing without losing performance. The material is made from two polyethylene variants belonging to the same chemical family, combining the elasticity of conventional stretch fibers with direct meltability for practical recycling.1
Current elasticized fabrics present a significant recycling challenge because their composite fiber structures require complex separation processes that render recovery economically unfeasible. The MIT team's approach circumvents this problem by engineering a single material system capable of functioning as both elastic fibers and recyclable feedstock. After ten consecutive cycles of melting and respinning, the yarn retained its original strength and flexibility without degradation.1
The innovation addresses a pressing sustainability concern in the fashion industry. Americans alone discard approximately 81 pounds of clothing per person annually, a volume that conventional recycling infrastructure struggles to accommodate.1 According to Svetlana Boriskina, a research scientist on the project from MIT's Department of Mechanical Engineering, this recyclable yarn technology could establish a more sustainable circular economy for textiles.1
