Researchers from UNSW Sydney and Griffith University have challenged the widespread claim that individual environmental behaviors distract people from supporting broader climate policies.[1] A four-year longitudinal study tracking nearly 2,800 Australians found that personal climate actions—including recycling, using reusable containers, taking public transportation, adopting green diets, and cycling to work—neither reduced nor increased support for wider climate policy and collective action.[1]
The research, led by Dr. Omid Ghasemi from UNSW's Climate Risk and Resilience Institute, monitored participants from 2021 to 2024 and was published on July 23, 2026, in the journal npj Climate Action.[1] During this period, collective climate action and climate policy support declined slightly, while personal environmental behaviors remained relatively stable.[1] According to Dr. Ghasemi, "personal climate action neither promotes nor undermines broader climate engagement."[1]
