NATO is bolstering its military presence in the Black Sea in response to intensifying Russian strikes against commercial shipping. The escalation comes as Russia has ramped up attacks on vessels in the region, with Russian forces responsible for approximately 80 percent of incidents since July, according to senior analyst Thomas Alexis of Ambrey 1.
On Tuesday, Russian forces attacked three cargo ships near Reni Port and two additional vessels heading toward Odesa 1. Over the past two weeks, at least five merchant ships have been struck off the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria, resulting in 23 crew members killed or missing 1. To counter these threats, NATO will deploy additional maritime patrol aircraft, radar systems, unmanned vehicles, and intelligence personnel to the area, according to NATO spokeswoman Alison Hart, who stated the alliance would increase assets "to support surveillance, reconnaissance, and evidence gathering" 1.
Romania has also taken direct action against intruders in its airspace. Late last weekend, Romanian forces shot down two suspected Russian unmanned drones, with Defense Minister Radu Mirută indicating that one operated at a speed of 450 kilometers per hour and may have been a Russian-made Geran-4 1.
