China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has issued a draft regulation prohibiting vehicles without Level 3 or higher autonomous driving systems from installing ADS indicator lights, effectively banning the blue signal lights used by Level 2 semi-autonomous vehicles.1 Multiple automakers had already received notifications about this restriction in July.1
The new rule, contained in the "Installation Requirements for Automobile and Trailer External Lighting and Light Signal Devices (Draft for Comment)," mandates that ADS indicator lights use a blue-green color and can only be equipped on vehicles with Level 3 or higher autonomous driving capability.1 The regulation distinguishes between automation levels: Level 2 represents combined driving assistance, Level 3 represents conditional automation, Level 4 represents highly automated driving, and Level 5 represents fully automated driving.1
