Britain's RSPCA charity has warned that animal rescue centers nationwide are reaching a breaking point as cats arrive faster than they can be rehomed.1 In 2025, the organization responded to 1,780 incidents involving ten or more cats, accounting for over 36,000 animals—a surge of nearly 65 percent compared to the previous year.1
The scale of the challenge has strained the charity's infrastructure significantly.1 RSPCA's 14 national centers and private foster facilities received an average of 624 cats per month in 2025,1 while historical data shows intakes at the 14 animal centers alone rose from 4,436 cats in 2021 to 6,408 in 2024, with 5,616 already admitted by October 2025.1 All foster centers and independent branches combined took in approximately 20,000 cats in 2024, with numbers expected to increase in 2026.1
Beth Clements described the situation: "We are seeing a huge volume of cats and kittens coming in. Sadly this hasn't slowed down—it's having a massive impact on our centers and branches."1 Jo Rowland, the charity's chief executive, added that "our current animal numbers exceed the space capacity of our centers and branches—a heartbreaking situation that other animal charities and rescue centers are also facing."1
In response, RSPCA is appealing to residents across England and Wales to consider adopting cats or volunteering as foster carers to help alleviate the crisis.1
