The Sudanese military's drone strikes have killed more than 200 people in two separate attacks.1 On Sunday evening in West Kordofan State, a drone strike hit a truck carrying approximately 200 mourners traveling to a funeral, resulting in 145 deaths, with an additional 5 people killed in nearby tents and around 150 injured.1 The following morning at approximately 11:30 GMT on Monday, another drone strike targeted a fuel market in the Abyei region, killing 73 people.1 The Sudanese military claimed the market served as a fuel supply point for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the paramilitary group opposing the army in the ongoing conflict.1
The strikes have heightened regional tensions, prompting South Sudan to formally protest the incidents by summoning the Sudanese ambassador.1 A United Nations spokesperson expressed alarm at the attacks, stating: "We are shocked by the continuing deadly drone strikes, which are causing civilian casualties, including children, and destroying essential services."1 Drones have become an increasingly prevalent weapon in Sudan's conflict, which has already claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and displaced over 14 million people.1 The humanitarian crisis continues to deepen, with 20 million people facing acute hunger and famine risks reported in Darfur and Greater Kordofan regions.1
