Paul Mackenzie, the leader of a doomsday cult in Kenya, has been found guilty of the murder of 191 people, comprising 190 children and one adult who died from starvation.1 The conviction came after Judge Diana Mochache delivered an eight-hour judgment in Mombasa.1 Mackenzie is scheduled to be sentenced on November 6, 2025.1
In a troubling revelation, Mackenzie's eldest son Daniel disclosed that his younger sisters were subjected to forced fasting for nearly three days just two weeks before the verdict.1 Daniel reported the matter to police and helped rescue eight children, including five of his own younger siblings, from his grandmother's home.1 Daniel himself endured severe deprivation as a child, having been forced to fast for nearly a week when he was twelve years old and removed from school at age seven.1
Beyond Mackenzie's conviction, 28 other cult leaders have also been found guilty of murder in connection with the case.1 The investigation into the cult had uncovered over 400 bodies buried in shallow graves in the Shakahola Forest in 2023.1
