The Wagner brothers have parted ways for the first time in their NBA careers this summer. Moritz Wagner did not receive a contract renewal from the Orlando Magic and has signed with the Brooklyn Nets 1, while Franz Wagner remains with the Magic as a cornerstone player under new head coach Shea Sweeney 1.
Franz Wagner has committed to the Magic with a long-term contract worth 224 million dollars (199 million euros) through 2030 1. The Magic have appointed Sweeney as their new head coach with the goal of advancing past the first round of the playoffs this season 1. Moritz's move to Brooklyn marks a significant shift after the brothers spent years playing alongside each other in Orlando, where Franz was drafted eighth overall in 2021 with Moritz already on the roster 2.
The separation reflects broader changes in German representation in the NBA. A total of eight German players are competing in the league this season 1, including Isaiah Hartenstein with the Thunder, Ariel Hukporti with the 76ers, Tristan da Silva and Franz Wagner with the Magic, Moritz Wagner with the Nets, and Dennis Schröder, Hannes Steinebacher, and Christian Anderson with the Hornets 2. Schröder, who has played for fourteen years in the NBA, now serves as captain for the Hornets 2. Steinebacher and Anderson, teammates on the German U19 national squad, won silver at the 2025 World Championship 2. The Wagner brothers previously won the basketball World Cup with the German national team in 2023 and competed at the Paris Olympics in 2024 2.
